A
very important meeting will be held at Kalama
Heights in Kihei
May 8, 2008
4:30 p.m. to 7 p.m.
Tony
Fisher is hosting Mark Spengler from the Big Island to come and
discuss the “Con Con” = “Constitutional Convention”.
We will be able to vote if we would like to hold a Con
Con on the November ballet,
and we would have the opportunity to abolish the CON =
Certificate of Need with this convention.
This is a very exciting way we would be able to make some
changes instead of trying to beg our legislators to save our
lives by abolishing the Certificate of Need.
This could allow the people to make the decision on our
hospital crisis. We
could also revisit what has worked for us and what has not using
this important tool. I
hope to see you there!
Seating
is very limited and you must call Tony Fisher at 874-3735 to
reserve a spot.

Maui Needs Another Hospital..
THIS SITE EXPLAINS WHAT IT
WILL TAKE TO OBTAIN ONE! WE CAN DO IT WITH YOUR
HELP!
You
will find comprehensive news, information and updates on
continuing our effort to build the much needed additional hospital(s)
on Maui.
Please pass the address of this website on to other Maui residents and visitors. Our goal is to make sure that every Maui citizen and visitor has the opportunity for better healthcare on Maui. Some
of your legislators appear to be trying to block our efforts. If you read the news articles and newsletters contained here, you will be amazed and shocked when you find who is for us and who is against us. More importantly, you will see what appears to be
obvious reasoning behind their actions (or more accurately in some cases, their non-action).

THE
"CERTIFICATE OF NEED" PROCESS MUST BE ABOLISHED.
WITH IT IN EFFECT, MAUI WILL PROBABLY NEVER
HAVE ADEQUATE MEDICAL SERVICES.
THIS PROCESS IS WHAT CAUSES MAUI RESIDENTS TO HAVE TO GO TO OAHU
FOR MEDICAL SERVICES THAT COULD BE AVAILABLE RIGHT HERE ON MAUI.
YOUR REPRESENTATIVES REFUSE TO EVEN DISCUSS THIS. THEY ARE NOT
REPRESENTING
YOU WHEN IT COMES TO MEDICAL CARE.

MARCH
UPDATES:
Email received March 23rd:
Just
wanted to let you know that again my husband has had
another medical emergency......Last time he had a heart attack
and it took 14 hours before they transferred him to
Queen's......Thursday of this week he lost his ability suddenly
to walk and the doctor said that he needed to have neurosurgery
immediately or his ability to walk could be at risk......(there
was no neurosurgeon here on Maui that could see him 'til
April 23rd!)......Be cause we didn't
want to go through the Maui Memorial Medical route as before we
were forced to stumble through the airport here and get to Oahu
to be taken to the emergency room which we did......Surgery was
done immediately but we don't know
if there is permanent damage to his legs yet or not.....Living
here on Maui is so difficult as you well know and as we age we
need more and more expert services.....(my husband is only 64
yrs old!)......Thank you again for fighting for our rights to
medical services......Queen's hospital was so great.... it made
me even more frustrated than ever that we second class citizens
of Maui are not privy to good health care......We will check
into the Airmed.....thank
you for the suggestion.......
FEBRUARY UPDATES:
FROM 2/16/08 Coconut Wireless:
Aloha Team AIHM and Legislators,
We have all had our ‘opinions’ on the subject of the CON. How about if we listen to the many experts involved in the studies both below and attached? These people hold doctorates in the subject. They have done the research. This document is from the U.S. DEPARTMENT
OF JUSTICE. read the complete issue....

AIHM’s mission is to serve as an advocate for the creation of a system that will provide excellent healthcare services to all of the citizens and visitors of Maui County. AIHM will first focus on
our most acute needs of a private, state of the art, full service, teaching hospital in Kihei; and a private hospital in West Maui.
- All of the people of Maui deserve equal and excellent healthcare.
- Maui island needs two additional hospitals.
- As Maui County is a healing place, we should diversify our economy with Medical Tourism.
- Maui needs a healthcare system that will provide excellent healthcare services to all of the citizens and visitors of Maui County.
- Governmental and political constraints are preventing a second hospital in Kihei or a satellite hospital in West Maui.
- Facilities and services of MMMC should be improved.
- Hospitals on Molokai and Lanai’i should be improved.
- Remote areas of Maui County need outreach clinics.
- Maui needs health link by telemedicine and rapid patient recovery by Air Helicopter Ambulance.

CON LAW MAP:
Yellow means there is NO
Certificate of Need required.
Note:
many of the states who retain a CON have greatly diminished its control. The
law may be in place for one or two services and nothing else. |

Jim has been a Maui resident since 2000. He and his family live in Lahaina. Jim has been
concerned about the healthcare situation on Maui and on the West Side. After Malulani was once again rejected by the CON, Jim wanted to do more to help. Forming a
politically active group was Jim’s proposal in continuing to fight for our healthcare on Maui. He has also made a generous donation to AIHM.

AIHM agrees that the answer is a 350 bed state of the art hospital in on Maui. What would really answer our needs is for that hospital to be a PRIVATE, teaching hospital.

 1. AIHM will operate as a communication center between the people of
Maui County, government officials, current medical facilities and
staff, and the varied existing groups and individuals that currently
exist to improve healthcare on Maui.
2. We will inform the public of the current people and systems that are
attempting to stop Maui from improving our healthcare system.
A history of who these people are and the possible reasons for
their actions will be provided to the members of AIHM.
AIHM will update the public as changes develop and actions are
taken. The “Coconut Wireless” will be the vehicle of communication.
A. Jan Shields will be available to speak with Maui County
groups who wish to discuss healthcare.
Contact Jan at information@AIHM-maui.org
to schedule.
3. AIHM’s goal is to change the governmental and political constraints
that are preventing us from meeting the healthcare needs of
our community.
A. Endorse candidates for the 2008 election year who are active
in fighting for new hospitals and who are against the CON.
B. Observe government groups (persons) and their actions
closely, report these actions to the members of AIHM.
4. AIHM advocates improved medical facilities and systems for Maui.
A. Addition of full service, 350 bed, state of the art, teaching
hospital in Kihei.
B. Addition of community hospital in West Maui with as many
services as possible, including helipad linking to Kihei hospital.
C. Improved facilities and services offered by MMMC.
D. Improved hospitals and healthcare services on Molokai
and Lanai’i.
E. Outreach clinics in the remote areas of Maui County
managed by the main campus of the Kihei hospital.
F. Remote areas of Maui County connected by telemedicine.
G. Rapid patient recovery by Air Helicopter Ambulance
managed by the main campus of the Kihei hospital.
5. AIHM will work with experts to help us eliminate the CON process.
6. AIHM will lobby the legislature to allow us to build our two new
hospitals. We will then continue to work to improve the existing
medical services in Maui County and to expand services to all
areas of Maui County.

DONATIONS
ARE APPRECIATED!
AIHM
is funded with contributions from generous organizations and individuals
who
are concerned about the lack of first-class healthcare on Maui.
AIHM is
deeply grateful to all of you who have donated. We have only been able to
accomplish all that we have done because of your generosity.
Our Organization is made possible only by volunteers donating their time and
efforts. We currently need monetary donations to cover the advertising
of our
“Doctors for AIHM” show, transportation for AIHM members to lobby
legislature, Jan’s salary, legal costs, office costs, and more to allow
AIHM to continue its work of educating the public and legislature.
After that, we will need to raise $100,000.00 for professional impact
studies on why we need more hospitals and why the CON costs more money than
it saves.
We
have come a long way and are being noticed by our representatives and our
community. It's more important than ever now to keep up the momentum.
You may make your donation on-line through PayPal, a secure internet
donations system. Simply click on the "Donate" button below. You
will have the option to make a one-time donation or monthly contributions.
If you prefer not to donate through PayPal, please make checks
payable to AIHM and mail to PO Box 11420, Lahaina, HI 96761.
A big Mahalo to AIHM's volunteers and contributors. We really appreciate all you do.
